Asmaa Msarwa

Asmaa Msarwa is a gerontologist and social worker who deals with the care of the elderly in Arab society who are victims of neglect, violence and abuse.

She received her bachelor’s and her master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Currently she conducts her PhD research on “Single women taking care of old parents in Arab families – An intergenerational perspective”, under the supervision of  Prof. Tova Band-Winterstein, in the Department of Gerontology at the University of Haifa. She is also a young researcher at the Minerva Center for the Study of the Marginal Population in Old Age.

The aim of her present study is to investigate the perception of the role of caring for elderly parents imposed on single girls in Arab society in light of the processes of change in society, and the meaning they give to their role from their point of view, the elderly parent, and the nuclear family.
